A septic tank works by letting solids settle and holding them until somebody removes them. Nothing about that process stops on its own, so a tank that has never been pumped is a tank that is slowly filling with the thing it cannot break down. Once the sludge layer reaches the outlet, solids start moving into the drain field, and a drain field is far more expensive to replace than a tank is to empty.

How often a South Florida tank needs pumping

The usual guidance is every three to five years, but the honest answer depends on your tank size, how many people live in the house, and what goes down the drain. A 1,000 gallon tank serving a family of five fills a great deal faster than the same tank serving a couple.

High water tables and heavy summer rain are both normal here, and both make a struggling system show symptoms sooner. If you are seeing slow drains, gurgling, or a patch of grass that is greener than the rest of the yard, do not wait for the calendar.

We locate and open the lids, pump the tank down to the bottom, and check the inlet and outlet baffles while the tank is empty and we can actually see them. If a baffle is gone or a filter is packed solid, that is the moment to find out, not six months later.
