The drain field is where the water actually leaves your system, soaking out through perforated pipe into the soil. It is the part of a septic system that fails last and costs most, which is why almost everything else we do is aimed at protecting it.

When a field does fail, it usually failed slowly: solids carried out of the tank over years, sealing the soil until water has nowhere to go. Several of our reviews are from homeowners we put new fields in for, and it is work we do regularly rather than send out.

Signs a field is going

Wet ground over the field in dry weather is the classic one. So is grass that grows noticeably faster and greener in one strip of the yard, or a smell outdoors that gets worse after heavy rain.

Inside the house, drains that got slower over months rather than overnight often point at the field rather than the line.

• Soggy or spongy ground above the field when it has not rained
• A bright green stripe across an otherwise even lawn
• Backups that return within days of a pump-out
• Standing water over the field after a normal storm

Repair or replace

Not every failing field needs replacing. Sometimes the tank is passing solids because a baffle or filter is gone, and fixing that plus resting the field buys real time. Sometimes the field is genuinely finished.

We will tell you which one you have. Saying a repair will hold when it will not is how a customer ends up paying twice.
