Septic Baffles and Effluent Filters
Baffles are the two simple barriers inside your tank that keep incoming flow from stirring things up and keep floating solids from leaving through the outlet. An effluent filter sits on the outlet and catches what the baffle does not.
They are the cheapest parts in the whole system and the ones whose failure costs the most, because when they go, solids head for the drain field.
How they fail
Concrete baffles crumble with age and sewer gas. Filters do not fail so much as fill: a filter that has never been cleaned eventually blocks completely, and the tank backs up toward the house.
Both are only visible with the tank pumped down, which is why we check them on every pump-out rather than as a separate paid visit.

How often should an effluent filter be cleaned?
Every pump-out at minimum. If the household is heavy on the system, more often.
Is a filter required?
Not on every older system, but it is one of the cheapest ways to protect a drain field, so it is usually worth adding.
Can a missing baffle be replaced without a new tank?
In most cases, yes. Replacement baffles can be fitted to a sound tank.
